Hamburg

May 1st, 2003

The Youth Hostel in Hamburg is absolutely superb. It’s perched up on a hill with a great view overlooking the harbour. It’s also really close to the subway. My first day started in the afternoon with a trip to the old part of the city. I took a look around first at St. Nicholai-Kirche. This church has been a Hamburg landmark for hundreds of years, and has been destroyed about 5 times. The first 4 were by nature, and the last one was in WW2. It was left after the war ain its ruined state, as a moving anti-war monument. Basically, the only thing of the church that remained after the war was the approx 137m spire - thatss ironic because the spire was the part that fell down all of the other times it was destroyed. There was a little exhibit under the church which I visited. I left there and made my way to the Rathaus, with 6 more rooms than Buckingham Palace. It was very large and grand, but I wasn’t allowed to go in because the king of Norway or someone was coming over the next day. Bah. I then had some dinner and headed off to check out the Reeperbahn. The Reeperbahn is the red-light district that is supposed to be second only to Amsterdam. I suppose that a large red light district would be expected in Hamburg, seeing as it’s been a very major port in Europe for the last 1000 years or so. My impression was that it was pretty boring compared to Amsterdam, and a lot dirtier. I had heard there was a street that was blocked at both ends by big metal gates, and women and children were denied access. I didn’t see anything like that.

The next morning was spent searching for an internet caf

New Poker night

April 25th, 2003

After the great success of the last poker night, I have decided to have another one tonight (25/04/03).

It is exactly the same as last time, but I will repost the information for those who can’t scroll down.

Gentlemen’s Poker evening
Hello Gentlemen,

There will be a poker evening at my place tonight (Friday, 25/04/03). Here’s the lowdown:

If you are coming, you should arrive at 8pm after RSVPing by Thursday. There will be a $5 entry fee charged, of which, $4 will go into the kitty and you will receive $4 worth of chips. The remaining $1 will be chipped in for mixers, snacks, and ice. You should bring your own alcohol.

The rules will be Texas Holdem, and rules can be read at http://www.pokerroom.com/main/page/games/holdem3Rules

The schedule:
8pm: People arrive and we have a few practice hands to get the rules down pat. Failure to arrive before here means you probably won’t know the rules properly and it may hamper your gameplay for the real stuff.
9pm: First game will start. Failure to arrive before now means that you will not be permitted to play this evening, as all of the chips will have already been distributed.
10:30pm: The last game will end. The chips that people have are cashed in at the kitty. If you leave before now, your chips will have been distributed amongst the remaining players, and you will receive nothing from the kitty.

That’s about it. Hope to see you there.

Bryce.

I’ve been very lazy.

April 7th, 2003

I have been very lazy and haven’t bothered to update this BLOG for ages. I’m sorry about that. In recent news, I’ve been doing assignments and going to uni. I am now building up myself to start looking for jobs again, because the ol’ cash reserves are running low.

Mum had a big birthday during the week, and dad arranged for her to be picked up by a biker and have a Harley ride across town. It was very amusing. We had arranged for a gawking crowd to be in attendance to act as the Paparazzi, and we had a good showing, even though the biker was 1.5 hours late. Mum never cracked dad’s code word of “morning tea”, whenever he referred to the surprise. There was also an hysterical video taken of the event by Harry and Eleni, our neighbors. My two brothers and I got her a covered swinging chair for the back yard, which we have yet to put up but will no doubt eventually get around to.

My life has been fairly mundane, with my time being taken up with lots of uni stuff, playing pool and having coffee. I really need to get stuck back into tennis before I forget how to play completely, but no one else seems keen on it.

I might go to the beach on Wednesday if I can be bothered and can find someone to go with, otherwise it will be spent submitting job applications. I am having a gentleman’s poker evening this Friday night, which should be a bit of a laugh. It’ll be $5 entry which will buy $4 worth of playing chips, and $1 chip-in towards the cost of soft drinks and other mixers and potato chips. If anyone’s keen and sees this before Friday, let me know that you’ll be coming. The rest of the weekend will be taken up with seeing the new Rowan Atkinson movie, hopefully finding a game of tennis with someone, no doubt meeting for coffee, and probably knocking off a portion of one of the many assignments that haunt my life. Oh yeah, I still have to catch up on typing the last bit of my travels in Europe (over a month ago now!), so maybe that’ll get done on the weekend.

My new beard style

Here are some piccies of my new goatee and mutton chops. It was originally going to be shaved, but I only got half way and liked what I saw. I’m such a sexy man.
